When I was growing up many of my friends who had one Af Am parent (or a parent 1/2 Af Am) and a parent of another race (any other race), they classified themselves as black/AfAm. Now, many of my friends and/or their children are classifying themselves as mixed race. I guess since forms and applications make us choose, my child would have to choose mixed race or decline to state? I’m Af Am, he’s 50% Iranian, 25% White, and 25% South American. He chooses mixed race (or Iranian if he must specify-this mostly occurs in conversation).

I’m studying to be a counselor and I have experience with multi-cultural identification. You and your children are welcome to identify with whatever race you choose; you can even identify as mixed race :). Your choice; don’t feel as though you have to choose one or feel pigeon holed within a particular race.

I can’t wait until all of all our mixed race babies grow up and marry other mixed races and have babies, and soon enough, the races will be sooooo mixed that our planet will just be seen as one big mixed race of human beings, not colors or ethnicities.
